Among others, the Bongo Square ceremonial ground hosted the golden jubilee celebration of Cameroon’s Reunification, which President Paul Biya chaired in February 2014.

Unlike it is the tradition, the Bongo Square ceremonial grounds in Buea, South West Region will not vibrate to the rhythms of National Day celebration on Wednesday May 20, 2020 because of threats posed by the Coronavirus monster. The two grandstands will be void of chairs, decorations, march-past parade, and its usual buoyant spectators.

Nevertheless, the venues will recall historic moments. The spacious and VIP grandstand was a gift and host of the memorable golden jubilee celebration of Cameroon’s Reunification, which President Paul Biya chaired in February 2014. Since then, the site is highly solicited for major events. Among others, the funeral of Ekema Patrick, Mayor of Buea, was organized there.

Also, important ceremonies in the likes of the International Women’s Day are staged at the second grandstand. In the absence of May 20 parade that has not in any way affected the beauty of the Bongo Square grandstands, the day, many have suggested, should be used for general clean up to rollback COVID-19 and other pathologies that strive in dirt.
